The Fiddle & Folk Program at Serena Eades Academy of Music introduces students to the vibrant world of traditional folk music while building foundational violin skills. This program emphasizes learning by ear with supplementary reading skills to foster a well-rounded musical experience.

  • Folk Melodies: Introduction to simple, popular fiddle tunes.

  • Scales: Focus on G Major, D Major, and A Major (1 octave) along with arpeggios, with additional scales introduced as appropriate.

  • Music Styles: Learn to distinguish between different folk styles such as Jigs, Reels, Polkas, and Airs.

Repertoire and Learning Resources Violinkids Lesson Volume 1: Foundational materials for young fiddle players. Violinkids Activity Book Volume 1: Introduces basic music theory through fun, interactive activities. Once Upon a String (S. Sabir): Engaging folk tunes to help students develop their ear for folk music. Fiddleworks Volumes 1-2 (Z. Rokeby-Thomas): Progressive fiddle repertoire from beginner to intermediate levels. Fun & Easy Fiddle Tunes from Around the World (C. Sleep): A diverse collection of fiddle tunes to explore global folk traditions. The Intermediate Fiddle Program at Serena Eades Academy of Music is designed for students looking to refine their style, technique, and musical expression in the world of traditional and folk music. This program emphasizes nuanced playing, rhythmic precision, and the development of ornamentation and idiomatic bowing techniques.

  • Style & Ornamentation: Focus on developing stylistic elements such as ornamentation and idiomatic bowing patterns unique to folk music.

  • Scales: Includes 2-3 octave major and minor scales, along with arpeggios, to enhance technical mastery.

  • Music Styles: Introduction to more advanced folk forms such as Strathspeys, Hornpipes, and Marches, along with other traditional genres.

  • Nuanced Playing: Emphasis on developing rhythmic sensibilities, groove, and expressive playing.

Repertoire and Learning Resources Fun & Easy Fiddle Tunes from Around the World (C. Sleep): A diverse collection of tunes from global fiddle traditions to enhance style and repertoire. Selected Repertoire: Custom pieces selected by the teacher and student to match the student’s interests and developmental goals. I Can Read Music: Continued development of sight-reading skills to complement ear training. Selected Études: Carefully chosen études designed to improve dexterity, speed, bow control, intonation, and accuracy. The Advanced Fiddle Program at Serena Eades Academy of Music is designed for students looking to deepen their expertise in specific sub-genres of fiddle music. This program offers flexibility to explore various styles while continuing to build on advanced technical skills and rhythmic precision.

  • Sub-Genre Focus: Continued exploration of specific fiddle styles such as Cape Breton, Irish, Bluegrass, Old Time, Ottawa Valley, French-Canadian, Pop, and an introduction to Jazz for interested students.

  • Scales: Focus on 3-octave major and minor scales, pentatonic scales, and arpeggios to enhance tonal range and technical proficiency.

  • Études: Targeted études to develop specific techniques related to the chosen style and improve overall technical ability.

  • Rhythm & Pulse: Further development of rhythmic sensibilities and pulse to achieve a strong, stylistically accurate groove.

Repertoire and Learning Resources Selected Repertoire: Custom repertoire chosen based on the student's interest and goals, ensuring a personalized and engaging learning experience. Études: Advanced technical studies including works by Wohlfahrt, Kreutzer, and Schradiek to develop dexterity, bow control, and specific techniques.
